Who I am
Grade 8
What do I want people to know about me? How do I want to be seen? What is the function of a portrait?
We’ve been looking at the amazing portraits of American contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley, and learning about his process. While he hand-paints the patterns in the backgrounds of his portraits, you will use your block prints to form your patterned background. Since your design uses imagery and symbols that represent something about who you are, your portrait will communicate another layer about you. Like Wiley, and in connection with your Social Studies unit on the Renaissance, you will be digging into Renaissance portraiture to find a pose that you feel echoes how you want to be seen in your portrait.
Do you want to be seen as thoughtful? Powerful? Kind?
How might you position your body to project these qualities?
Your task sheet and rubrics are on Schoology.
