A Twist on Tradition
Grade 11
How important are the materials and techniques an artist uses?
How can the use of traditional materials/art forms/crafts affect meaning?
This project is aimed at getting you to work in 3D, and to consider how artists often look to traditional art forms or crafts in order to create works of art with meaning. The materials and methods an artist uses play an important role in communicating the intention behind a piece, so to get your creative juices flowing, you are going to study a traditional material/art form/craft that is related to your culture, or a culture of a place in which you have lived. With this in mind, think of a current event or topic that interests you, and that you would like to make a piece about. How will you best communicate your intention, and what materials will you use? Will you turn to Moroccan lamp-making? Chinese paper cutting? Quilting?
