The Fish
Grade 8
During the Renaissance, Art and Science often overlapped as artists like Leonardo da Vinci investigated the world around them, and tried to understand how it all worked. Renaissance artists were fascinated by life, and strove to create realistic works of art that were informed by their observation of light and shadow, as well as anatomy. To understand how light falls on an object, it helps to know something about how that object is built. This meant that Renaissance artists often dissected animals and humans.
You will now step into the shoes of a Renaissance artist, by creating an observational drawing of a fish. You will be using charcoal, chalk, and an eraser for this task, with the goal of creating as accurate a drawing of the fish as you can. Now the trick is, you have to first dissect the fish!
