Where is the line?
Grade 11
Where is the line between inspiration and plagiarism? How do we determine if a work of art is merely a reinterpretation or transcription, and not theft?
A transcription in art is when an artist copies or reinterprets another work of art with an intention or purpose that is different from the original— think of Roy Lichtenstein’s giant Pop paintings of comics, that were transcriptions of images created by other artists. He was often accused of plagiarism— what do you think? Did he change the original images enough to make them his own?
In this project you will explore this touchy subject by creating your own piece that transcribes a famous work from Art History— but here’s the challenge: your reinterpretation must be created with lens-based and digital media. The goal is to experiment with a different art-making form, and to delve a little deeper into Art History. We will be examining how numerous artists throughout history have used the work of others to create their own works of art.
