Something fishy in the Art House…

dissecting

Last week, Grade 8 stepped into the shoes of Renaissance artists by dissecting real barbunya fish and describing what they saw in detailed charcoal drawings, using value and contrast. The experience was challenging, fun, and a bit smelly.

Artists in the Renaissance frequently dissected animals and even people to understand what was going on inside the bodies; if you can understand what the inner structures or anatomy of a human are, then you can understand how to draw the outside. You know where light and shadows will fall, and you know how the body moves.

Grade 8 is currently studying value, one of the seven Elements of Art. Value is the lightness and darkness in a work of art, and it is what gives a sense of dimension to paintings and drawings. Value is one of the ways Renaissance artists made their artwork look so lifelike.
