Sketching Istanbul in Büyükçekmece

Yesterday, the Sketching Istanbul group took a short trip to the beautiful Mimar Sinan bridge in our nearby town of Büyükçekmece. This was our second visit to the bridge, which was built in 1567 by the Ottoman Empire’s greatest architects, Mimar Sinan. Mimar Sinan was the chief architect during the Empire’s golden age under Süleyman the Magnificent, building over 300 structures. Though his masterpiece is considered to be the Selimiye Camii in Edirne (which is incredible, by the way), his favourite is said to be this humble bridge. For a sketcher, its undulations and geometry make it a challenge to capture on paper— I’ve tried drawing it several times with limited success, but our sketchers managed to do a great job.
